On September 10th, 2011, Marcus Smart committed to play college basketball at Oklahoma State University.
During his freshman season at Oklahoma State, Smart averaged 15.4 points, 5.8 rebounds, and 4.2 assists per game and set a freshman Big 12 record when he recorded 99 steals in the season (an average of 3 per game). In this season, Smart won both Big 12 Freshman of the Year and Big 12 Player of the Year.
As a sophomore, Smart was named one of the 30 finalists for the Naismith College Player of the Year. In the first game of the 2014 NCAA tournament, he finished with 23 points, 13 rebounds, 7 assists and 6 steals, becoming the first player in tournament history to record 20 points, 10 rebounds, 5 assists and 5 steals. Yet, Oklahoma State lost to Gonzaga. During his two seasons at Oklahoma State, Smart averaged 16.6 points, 5.9 rebounds and 4.5 assists in 33.1 minutes per game.
On April 7, 2014, Smart declared for the 2014 NBA Draft. Two months later, Smart was selected with the 6th overall pick in the 2014 NBA Draft by the Boston Celtics.
Smart’s NBA Career So Far
Marcus Smart averaged 7.8 points and 3.1 assists per game during his 2014-15 rookie season, which earned him a spot on the NBA All-Rookie Second Team. Smart recorded his first career triple-double with 10 points, 11 assists and 11 rebounds during a win against the Phoenix Suns on January 15th, 2016. In doing so, Smart became the first Celtics player to record a triple-double off the bench since Art Williams did so in 1971. His scoring average increased to 9.1 points per game in year two.
After an injury plagued 2017-18 season, where Smart only played in 54 games, he earned himself a starting role for the Celtics during in 2018-19. Once this season ended, Smart was named to the NBA All-Defensive First Team for the first time in his career. He also won the 2019 NBA Hustle Award, which is given to the NBA player that best utilizes hustle to help their teams win on a nightly basis.
Upon being one of the first NBA players to test positive for COVID in 2020, Smart went on have the best scoring season of his career in that shortened 2020-21 season, averaging 13.1 points per game. After the season, he was named to the NBA All-Defensive First Team for the second time.
Smart was named the 2021–22 NBA Defensive Player of the Year on April 18, 2022 — the first guard to win the award since 1996. He was also named to the NBA All-Defensive First Team for that 2021-22 season, receiving more first-place votes than any other NBA player.
Marcus Smart played a crucial role in the Celtics making it to the 2022 NBA Finals. In Game 3 of the Finals, Smart posted 24 points, seven rebounds and five assists in a 116–100 win over the Golden State Warriors. But the Celtics ultimately lost to the Warriors in six games. Smart won his second NBA Hustle Award after the season.
Smart also had an excellent 2023 NBA Playoffs run, where he averaged 14.9 points, 4.0 rebounds, 5.1 assists, and 1.3 steals per game. It was some of the best basketball he has ever played. Then, a few weeks after the season ended and he received his third NBA Hustle Award, Smart was traded to the Memphis Grizzlies.
Marcus Smart 2023-24 Season Forecast
Although Marcus Smart is listed as 6 foot 2, he has a 6 foot 9 inch wingspan — which helps him to be a world-class defender. His defensive tenacity, combined with timely shooting and leadership qualities, will make Marcus Smart an instant fan favorite in Memphis. And now that he’s playing alongside Ja Morant, who will handle much of the offensive burden, Smart can now focus more on his defense than ever. He’ll likely be guarding the opposing team’s best Guard every night; a challenge Smart is surely up for. For that season, I predict Marcus Smart’s points per game might decrease some, perhaps down to 10 points per game from the 11.5-13.1 it has been in recent years. But Smart’s value isn’t solely about scoring. The Grizzlies will become a more tenacious, passionate team with Smart on their roster, as he always seems to bring out the hustling spirit within his teammates. For that reason, Smart’s tenure with the Grizzlies is almost sure to be a success — and I wouldn’t be surprised if he helps leads them to a deep playoff run in 2023-24.
