Trae Young 2023-24 Profile
After becoming a household name in college, Trae Young — the 6 foot 1, 164 pound Point Guard for the Atlanta Hawks — proved his star potential as soon as he entered the NBA. Despite doubts that his college game wouldn’t translate into the NBA (considering his size and below-average athleticism for the position), Young had made those doubters eat their words. Yet, while Young has acquired many individual accolades, his Atlanta Hawks haven’t achieved sustained success since he became the face of their franchise in 2019. Will the 2023-24 season be the one where Young and his Hawks squad break through? It very well could be.
In this article, we’re going to breakdown Trae Young’s general information, his pre-NBA background, how his NBA career has fared thus far, and what to expect from his upcoming season.
Trae Young General Information
Rayford Trae Young was born on September 19, 1998, in Lubbock, Texas, USA. His parents are Candice and Rayford Young — the latter of whom played college basketball at Texas Tech and professionally in Europe.
Trae Young is married to Shelby Miller. The couple met during their time at the University of Oklahoma, and were married in July 2023. Young and Miller have one child together, Tydus Reign Young, who was born on June 2, 2022.
On August 6, 2021, Trae Young signed a five-year, $215,159,700 contract with the Atlanta Hawks, which makes for an annual salary of $43,031,940. Young’s net worth is estimated to be $50 million.
Trae Young wears jersey number 11, and wears a size 12 (US) shoe.
Trae Young Background
Trae Young attended Norman North High School in Norman, Oklahoma. As a junior, Young averaged 34.2 points, 4.6 rebounds, and 4.6 assists. As a senior, Young averaged a whopping 42.6 points, 5.8 rebounds, and 4.1 assists per game while shooting at a 48.9% rate. He also played in the 2017 McDonald’s All-American game during that season.
Young was considered the #2 high school Point Guard recruit in his 2017 class, according to ESPN. And on February 16, 2017, Young committed to play college basketball at the University of Oklahoma.
Trae Young went on to record one of the best freshman seasons in recent memory. He finished his freshman regular season in 2018 leading the country in many statistics: assists (271), points (848), points per game (27.4), assists per game (8.7), and assist percentage (48.6%). The 848 points Young scored in the Big 12 conference broke the conference’s record for most points scored by a freshman player.
During that season, Young won the Wayman Tisdale Award (given to the best freshman in college basketball each season), the National Freshman of the Year, Big 12’s Freshman of the Year, and was a member of the All-Big 12 First Team and All-American First Team.
Following Oklahoma’s upset loss to the Rhode Island Rams in the 2019 NCAA Tournament, Young decided to declare for the 2018 NBA Draft. And on June 21, 2018, Young was selected with the fifth overall pick in the 2018 NBA Draft by the Dallas Mavericks — and then was traded to the Atlanta Hawks on draft night.
Young’s NBA Career So Far
Trae Young wasted no time in proving the hype he garnered in college was accurate. As a rookie in the 2018-19 season, Young averaged 19.1 points, 8.1 assists, and 0.9 steals per game. While the Hawks didn’t make the playoffs in Young’s first season, he was a unanimous selection to the 2019 NBA All-Rookie First Team.
Young’s game took a massive leap in his second season. In 2019-20, Young’s scoring average jumped to 29.6 points per game, his assists increased to 9.3 per game, and his steals increased to 1.1 per game. Young also made his first All-Star team in this season, being selected as a backcourt starter for the Eastern Conference.
Yet, Young’s defensive game wasn’t developing at the same rate as his offensive game. On February 19, 2020, Bleacher Report named Young the worst defensive point guard in the NBA.
In the 2020-21 season, Young proved that he was capable of leading a team to the playoffs. After he averaged 25.3 points and 9.3 assists during the regular season, Young’s Hawks team finished the regular season with a 41-31 record, which made them the #5 Eastern Conference seed in the NBA Playoffs.
After defeating the New York Knicks in the first round, the Hawks upset the top-seeded Philadelphia 76ers in the Eastern Conference semi-finals in seven games. Unfortunately, the Hawks Cinderella story ended in the Eastern Conference Finals, when they lost to the Milwaukee Bucks in six games. Young averaged 28.8 points and 9.5 assists per game throughout the playoffs.
Expectations were high for Young’s 2021-22 season — and he delivered, averaging 28.4 points and 9.7 assists per game, along with shooting a career-high 38.2% from three-point range. Young was also named to his second All-Star team, once again being named a backcourt started for the Eastern Conference. Although the Hawks lost in the first round of the 2022 NBA Playoffs, Young was named to the All-NBA Third Team, and became the second player in NBA history to lead the league in total points and assists in a season.
Young’s scoring dropped slightly during the 2022-23 NBA season, but stayed at a very respectable 26.2 points per game. Yet, his assists per game was a career-high 10.2. The Atlanta Hawks would make the 2023 Playoffs as a #8 seed, but lost to the Boston Celtics in the first round.
Trae Young 2023-24 Season Forecast
After not being selected to the 2022-23 All-Star team, Young will surely want to right that wrong in 2023-24. I expect him to improve on last season’s scoring output, and remain at right around 10 assists per game while still excelling in outside shooting and making plays for his teammates.
The real question is how far the Atlanta Hawks can go. While Young has made steady improvements as a defender throughout his career, he’s still viewed as a below-average defender in the NBA. And since the NBA is loaded with incredibly talented Point Guards, this is a deficiency that has — and could continue to — cost the Atlanta Hawks; especially in the postseason.
One would imagine Young has been putting in the work to improve as a defender this offseason. Now we only have a short time to wait to see whether that hard work will pay off.
