Sidney Crosby 2023-24 Profile
Sidney Crosby, a 5-11 center, is the franchise player for the Pittsburgh Penguins, the team that drafted him first overall in 2005.
He is widely considered the best player of the 2010s and one of the greatest players ever. He has an outstanding vision of the ice and anticipates playing as well as anybody who has ever played the game of hockey. He has been a leader since he was a teenager in the league, ready to take over games in clutch time.
Crosby is not as quick as he once was but is way smarter, which helps him play at the highest level at this point of his career. He still makes his presence felt on both ends of the ice and is one of the best passers in the game today.
Sidney Crosby General Information
Sidney Crosby was born in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, on August 7, 1987. A fun fact is that his jersey number 87 and the signing for $8.7 million per year reflect his date of birth, 8/7/87.
His father, Troy, was a goalie for the Verdun Junior Canadiens in the QMJHL and was drafted by the Montreal Canadiens in 1985 but never played in the NHL. Crosby started playing hockey at a very young age, and there was no doubt that he would follow in his father’s footsteps.
He attended Astral Drive Junior High School and, in 2005, transferred to Harrison Trimble High School, where he graduated.
Sidney Crosby Background
Crosby was an outstanding prospect at a very young age. When he was 13 years old, he was not allowed to play in the league for 15 and 17-year-old kids, a decision that his parents took to court.
When he was 14, he entered the midget level and stood out against kids a couple of years older than him.
Crosby was selected first overall in the 2003 Midget Draft by the Rimouski Océanic of the QMJHL. Crosby finished his rookie QMJHL season with 54 goals and 81 assists over 59 games to capture the Jean Beliveau Trophy as the league’s leading point-scorer. The following season, Crosby led the league with 66 goals, 102 assists, and 168 points over 62 games to capture his second consecutive Beliveau Trophy.
Sidney Crosby’s NHL Career So Far
Crosby was selected first overall pick at the 2005 NHL Draft by the Pittsburgh Penguins. He scored his first NHL goal in the Penguins’ home opener against the Boston Bruins. That season was very turbulent for the Penguins as Mario Lemieux was forced to retire, and head coach Ed Olczyk was fired and replaced by Michel Therrien, who shortly after named Crosby an alternate captain. He had a successful rookie season, setting Penguins rookie records with 63 assists and 102 points. He also became the youngest player in NHL history to score 100 points in a single season.
At the beginning of his sophomore season, Crosby scored his first hat trick and had his first six-point game. He finished 2006–07 with 36 goals and 84 assists in 79 games to become the first teenager to lead the NHL in scoring since Wayne Gretzky in 1980. Being only 19 years old at the time, Crosby became the youngest player in NHL history to win the Art Ross Trophy and the youngest scoring champion in any major North American professional sport. That season, Crosby also won the Hart Memorial Trophy and the Lester B. Pearson Award.
The Penguins signed him to a contract extension going into his third season. Crosby had a couple of injuries, missing 29 games, but still scored 72 points. At the beginning of his fourth NHL season, Crosby reached the milestones of 100 goals, 200 assists, and 300 points for his career. He finished the season with 33 goals and 70 assists and, more importantly, won the first Stanley Cup as the Penguins defeated the Detroit Red Wings. At 21 years, 10 months, and 5 days, Crosby became the youngest NHL captain to win the Stanley Cup since 1895.
In the 2009-10 season, Crosby was tied for the best scorer and finished second in total points. At the beginning of the 2010-11 season, Crosby was on a 25-game scoring streak. In the middle of the season, he suffered a concussion and was sidelined for the remainder of the season. That was the beginning of a challenging period for him, and Crosby played only 99 games in three seasons due to injuries and the lockout.
Crosby was fully back for the 2013-14 season, playing a total of 80 games, and for the first time in his career, he led the league in assists. He also finished with a league-high 104 points, winning the Art Ross Trophy for the second time in his career.
In the 2014-15 season, Crosby scored his 300th career goal and recorded his 800th career point. He had a slow start to the following season, but after Mike Sullivan took over the coaching job with the Penguins, Crosby was back to his recognizable form. Crosby finished the season with 36 goals and 85 points in 80 games, including a career-high nine game-winning goals, and was voted team MVP for the sixth time in his career. The Penguins went all the way to beat the San Jose Sharks in the finals for Crosby’s second Stanley Cup.
During the following season, Crosby reached the 1000-point milestone and won the second consecutive Stanley Cup, beating the Nashville Predators. The 2016 Stanley Cup was the last in Crosby’s career by now. Meanwhile, he reached the milestones of 500 goals, 900 assists, and 1,500 total points.
Sidney Crosby 2023-24 Season Forecast
Crosby is entering the 11th year of his 12-year contract with the Penguins. He is far from his prime, but his understanding of the game and the class are still making him an outstanding player in the league.
The Penguins have had a couple of underachieving seasons and hopes that Crosby, with the combination of a couple of uprising start, would take the team to the Playoffs.
