Fernando Tatís Jr. 2024 Profile

If the MLB gave out awards for coolest player, Fernando Tatís Jr. — the 6 foot 3, 217 pound shortstop and right fielder for the San Diego Padres — would already be a multiple-time winner; despite being just 24 years old. Of course, the hype behind Tatís Jr. isn’t predicated solely on his swag. He is also one of the most naturally talented and athletic players the MLB has seen in a long time. Yet, while Tatís Jr. burst onto the scene in 2019 with an outstanding rookie season, the last two seasons have been somewhat disappointing, considering the lofty expectations Tatís Jr. has set for himself thus far. But 2024 offers the perfect opportunity for Tatís Jr. to turn that around.

In this article, we’ll discuss Fernando Tatís Jr.’s general information, his pre-MLB background, how his MLB career has gone so far, and what the 2024 season might have in store for him.

Fernando Tatís Jr. General Information

Fernando Gabriel Tatís Medina Jr. was born on January 2, 1999, in San Pedro de Macoris, Dominican Republic. His parents are Fernando Tatís Sr. and Maria Tatís. Tatís Sr. was also a professional baseball player, and played in the MLB for 13 years. Fernando Tatís Jr. is currently single.

On February 17, 2021, Tatís Jr. signed a 14-year, $340,000,000 contract with the San Diego Padres — which makes for an annual average salary of $24,285,714. Tatís Jr.’s net worth is estimated to be around $10 million.

Fernando Tatís Jr. wears jersey number 23, and both hits and throws with his right hand.

Fernando Tatís Jr. Background

Given that his father was already playing professional baseball when Fernando Tatís Jr. was born, Tatís Jr. spent a lot of time in professional baseball clubhouses and around the sport of baseball from a very young age.

Growing up, Tatís Jr. played in various baseball academies across the Dominican Republic before joining the Dominican Prospect League, which is where most of the Dominican Republic’s best young baseball talent plays.

The Chicago White Sox ultimately signed a 16 year old Tatís Jr. as an international free agent in 2015. However, the White Sox traded Tatís Jr. before he ever played a professional game, sending him to the San Diego Padres on June 4, 2016.

Tatís Jr. spent 2016 on the Padres’ Rookie-level Arizona League Team, and then with their Class-A Short Season team; batting a combined .273 with 4 home runs and 25 RBIs in 55 games that season.

In 2017, Tatís Jr. played for the Padres’ Class-A team before being promoted to their Class-AA team at the end of the 2017 season. With the two teams, Tatís Jr. recorded a .278 batting average with 22 home runs, 75 RBI, and 32 stolen bases.

Tatís Jr. entered 2018 as one of the top prospects in the minor leagues. In 88 games with the Padres’ Class-AA team, he batted .286 with 16 home runs, 43 RBI, and 16 stolen bases. His season was cut short, however, after needing season-ending surgery on a broken left thumb that he suffered during a head-first slide.

At the beginning of 2019, Tatís was ranked as one of the top three prospects in baseball. On March 26, 2019, the Padres announced that Tatís Jr. made their Opening Day roster.

Tatís Jr.’s MLB Career So Far

Fernando Tatís Jr. recorded two hits in his MLB debut, and recorded his first ever MLB home run on April 1, 2019. In August of that 2019, Tatís Jr. injured his back, which ended his season. He finished the year hitting .317 with 22 home runs, 61 runs, and 106 hits over 84 games — which was good enough to finish third in NL Rookie of the Year voting.

In a shortened 2020 season due to the pandemic, the then-21 year old Tatís Jr. batted .277 (10th best in the National League), with 50 runs scored (2nd best in the NL), 17 home runs (2nd best in NL), 42 RBIs (4th best in NL), and 11 stolen bases (4th best in NL). Ultimately, the Padres 2020 season ended with them losing in the NLCS to the Los Angeles Dodgers. Tatís Jr. finished 4th in NL MVP Voting and won the NL Silver Slugger Award (given to the best offensive player at each position) once the season ended.

After Tatís Jr. signed his massive contract prior to the 2021 season, expectations were sky high — and he delivered. He was named NL Player of the Month for May, was selected to his first All-Star Game, and became the fourth Padres player to hit 30 home runs and steal 20 bases in a season. Tatís finished the 2021 season hitting .282 with 97 RBIs, 25 stolen bases, and an NL-leading 42 home runs. He won his second-consecutive Silver Slugger Award and finished third in NL MVP voting.

2022 was a devastating year for Tatís Jr. After missing the first four months of the season due to an injury that was believed to be from a motorcycle accident, Tatís Jr. then tested positive for a performance enhancing drug (PED) on August 12, 2021. He was suspended 80 games because of this positive PED test, and missed the entire 2023 season as a result.

Tatís Jr.’s PED suspension ended 20 games into the 2023 season. Once he returned, he didn’t show the same elite form that he had before 2022; batting .257 with 25 home runs, 78 RBIs, and a career-high 29 stolen bases in 141 games played. The Padres did not make the 2023 postseason.

Fernando Tatís Jr. 2024 Season Forecast

Tatís Jr.’s 2022 PED suspension was disappointing for many reasons. One being that he’s a major role model for many young players, and using steroids sets a poor example. Another reason is that, since Tatís Jr. didn’t perform as well in 2023 as he had before getting caught taking steroids, many are wondering whether Tatís Jr.’s performance in those earlier seasons was the results of the PED’s he may have been taking.

Regardless, the 2024 season will offer Fernando Tatís Jr. a fresh slate. He certainly has all the talent in the world — and if he can put that on display once more, there’s no reason to believe he can’t become an All-Star once again and re-assert himself as one of the MLB’s brightest stars.
