Domantas Sabonis 2023-24 Profile

Domantas Sabonis — the 6 foot 10, 240 pound center/power forward for the Sacramento Kings — has been one of the league’s most underrated players for the majority of his career. And that’s perhaps because his ascent into being one of the NBA’s best big men has been gradual. It took him a few seasons to learn how to dominate the way he did in college — but when he learned to do so, the entire NBA took notice. Sabonis isn’t the loudest player, and doesn’t employ a playing style that turns eyes toward him, but many of his on-court contributions can’t be quantified into stats. And that’s why Kings fans love Domantas Sabonis.

In this article, we’ll discuss Domantas Sabonis’ general information, note his pre-NBA background, analyze how his NBA career has gone so far, and predict what we’ll see from him throughout the 2023-24 NBA season.

Sabonis wears jersey number 10, and is a size 17 (US) shoe.

Domantas Sabonis Background

Domantas Sabonis started his basketball career at 16 years old, playing for Unicaja Málaga of Spain. In January 2015, he finished in the top 5 for the 2014 FIBA Europe Young Men’s Player of the Year Award voting. Yet, during his entire time in Spain, Sabonis never signed a professional contract in Spain, in order to remain eligible for the NCAA.

Ultimately, Domantas Sabonis performed well enough in Spain to earn a scholarship to play college basketball at Gonzaga University in 2014 (turning down a 3 year, $630,000 contract from his Spanish team to do so).

In his first NCAA season, Sabonis averaged 9.7 points, along with Gonzaga team highs of 66.8% field-goal percentage and 7.1 rebounds. He was named to the All-WCC Second Team, and the WCC All-Freshman team. Gonzaga made it to the Elite Eight of the NCAA tournament that year.

As a sophomore in 2015-16, Sabonis earned First-Team All-WCC honors, and was named an AP Honorable Mention All-American. During the 2016 NCAA March Madness tournament, Sabonis averaged 19.6 points, 14.3 rebounds, 2.6 assists and 3.3 blocks per game.

At season’s end, Sabonis would declare for the 2016 NBA Draft. And on June 23, 2016, Sabonis was selected 11th overall pick of the 2016 NBA Draft by the Orlando Magic — and then was traded to the Oklahoma City Thunder on draft night.

Domantas Sabonis’s NBA Career So Far

Domantas Sabonis made his NBA debut on October 26, 2016, and recorded 5 points and 4 rebounds in 16 minutes. He participated in the NBA Rising Stars Challenge during All-Star weekend. In 81 games that rookie season, Sabonis averaged 5.9 points, 3.6 rebounds, and 1 assist per game. The Thunder made the playoffs, but were eliminated in the first round.

Prior to his second season, Sabonis would be traded to the Indiana Pacers. His averaged increased dramatically from season one to season two, with his points per game increasing to 11.6, rebounds per game increasing to 7.7, and assists per game doubling, as well. The Pacers made the 2018 playoffs, but lost in the first round.

Relegated to a role off of the bench for most of the 2018-19 season, Sabonis still saw his scoring average increase one again; this time to 14.1 points per game, His rebounds per game also increased to 9.3. And the 24.8 minutes per game were the most he played in his career to that point.

The 2019-20 year was a breakout one for Sabonis. After signing a contract extension with the Pacers, Sabonis was named to his first ever NBA All-Star team in 2020. During his first NBA All-Star Game appearance, Sabonis scored 2 points and grabbed 6 rebounds in 19 minutes.

While the Pacers played in the NBA’s Orlando “bubble” during the pandemic, Sabonis didn’t play, and instead got surgery to treat plantar fasciitis in his left foot. Having not played a game since the NBA shutdown in March, he finished with averages of 18.5 points, 12.4 rebounds, and 5.0 assists per game.

Sabonis made his second consecutive All-Star team in the 2020-21 season, and also won the 2021 All-Star Game Skills Challenge (which he was a runner-up in the previous season). Despite missing time due to injury, Sabonis logged 9 triple doubles during the regular season and finished the year averaging 20.3 points and 12 rebounds per game.

Sabonis scored a career-high 42 points on January 9, 2022, which was the highest scoring performance in Lithuanian NBA basketball history. On February 8, 2022, Sabonis was traded to the Sacramento Kings. The next day, in his Kings debut, he scored 22 points in addition to 14 rebounds and 5 assists across 32 minutes of play. Across the two teams, Sabonis averaged 18.9 points and 12.1 rebounds per game.

In his first full season with the Kings, Sabonis was named to his third NBA All-Star team. And after averaging 19.1 points, 12.3 rebounds (which was most in the league), and 7.3 assists per game, Sabonis was named to the 2023 All-NBA Third Team.

The Kings made the 2023 playoffs, but were eliminated by the Golden State Warriors. Sabonis averaged 16.4 points per game in the series.

Sabonis is also the youngest player to ever play for the Lithuanian national team. During the 2016 Summer Olympics, Sabonis averaged 5.5 points and 4.5 rebounds for the Lithuanian team.

Domantas Sabonis 2023-24 Season Forecast

We can surely expect Domantas Sabonis to improve from his already stellar 2022-23 season during the 2023-24 campaign. Despite being undersized for his position, Sabonis was the league’s best rebounder last year, which could very well continue this year. In addition, he adds the perfect complement to teammate De’Aaron Fox’s game, and the two have one of the best pick and roll techniques in the entire NBA. With one more season of comfortability under his belt, Sabonis and the Kings could produce their best season ever. Whether that will manifest in postseason success remains a mystery— but what’s for sure is that, with Sabonis still only being 27 years old, the best is yet to come for him and for his Sacramento Kings.
