D’Angelo Russell, often referred to as “D-Lo,” began his NBA career with the Los Angeles Lakers and quickly made a name for himself with his scoring ability and vision on the court. After moving through different teams, he had a notable season with the Brooklyn Nets, earning an All-Star selection in 2018-19. Known for his ice-in-his-veins celebration, Russell’s smooth play style, and clutch shot-making abilities have solidified him as a key player in the league. Off the court, Russell is known for his laid-back demeanor and has also made headlines for his close friendship with other players in the league, most notably Karl-Anthony Towns of the Minnesota Timberwolves.

D’Angelo Russell 2023-24 Profile

D’Angelo Russell — the 6 foot 4, 193 pound Point Guard for the Los Angeles Lakers — has carved out a solid NBA career for himself. Despite playing on multiple teams across his career, Russell is currently playing for the franchise who drafted him, and is surrounded by players who will allow Russell’s skillset of three-point shooting and excellent passing to shine. And Russell’s much improved defense has made him less of a liability on that end of the court, as well; all of which is to say that D’Angelo Russell is in prime position to have a breakout 2023-24 season — and could perhaps help the Lakers win another NBA Championship before LeBron James decides to retire.

In this article, we’ll discuss D’Angelo Russell’s general information, his early years, summarize his NBA career so far, and predict how his 2023-24 season will go.

D’Angelo Russell General Information

D’Angelo Russell was born on February 23, 1996, in Louisville, Kentucky, USA. His parents are Antonio Russell and Keisha Rowe. Russell’s girlfriend is Laura Ivaniukas, a model with Lithuanian heritage. The couple have been together since 2020.

On July 7, 2023, Russell signed a two-year, $36 million contract with the Los Angeles Lakers, which makes for an average annual salary of $18 million. Russell’s estimated net worth is $25 million.

D’Angelo Russell wears jersey number 1, and is a size 14 (US) shoe.

D’Angelo Russell Background

D’Angelo Russell attended Central High School in Louisville, Kentucky for his freshman season in 2010-11 before transferring to Montverde Academy in Montverde, Florida as a sophomore. In 2014, he helped Montverde win back-to-back High School National Tournament championships. As a senior, Russell played in both the McDonald’s All-American Game and the Jordan Brand Classic in 2014.

Rated a five-star recruit out of high school, Russell committed to play college basketball at Ohio State University on June 7, 2013. As a freshman at Ohio State, Russell averaged 19.3 points, 5.7 rebounds, 5.0 assists and 1.6 steals in 33.9 minutes per game. Russell earned the Jerry West Award (awarded to the best Shooting Guard in college basketball each season) and was named a consensus first team All-American, as well as first team All-Big Ten and Big Ten Freshman of the Year.

After his freshman season, Russell declared for the 2015 NBA Draft, projected to be a top pick. And on June 25, 2015, Russell was selected by the Los Angeles Lakers with the 2nd overall pick in the 2015 NBA Draft.

Russell’s NBA Career So Far

As a rookie with sky-high expectations in the 2015-16 season, D’Angelo Russell averaged 13.2 points and 3.4 rebounds. He finished the 2015–16 season leading all rookies in steals per game, and became the youngest ever player to hit 130 three-pointers in a season; all of which earned Russell NBA All-Rookie Second Team honors.

Russell’s production increased slightly in 2016-17, averaging 15.6 points along with 4.8 assists per game. Then Russell was traded to the Brooklyn Nets on June 22, 2017. Despite missing a large chunk of the 2017-18 season due to a knee surgery, Russell still managed to average 15.5 points and 5.2 assists per game in his first season with the Nets.

Then his production took a massive leap the next season. In 2018-19, Russell won his first career NBA Player of the Week Award and made his first (and only) NBA All-Star team. Russell helped the Nets finish the regular season as the sixth seed in the Eastern Conference, and he finished the season averaging 21.1 points and 7 assists per game.

Russell was traded to the Golden State Warriors on July 7, 2019. During his time on Golden State — a season where Klay Thompson didn’t play a single game and Steph Curry played in just five games — Russell averaged a career-high 23.6 points per game.

Russell was traded to the Minnesota Timberwolves in the middle of that 2019-20 season. During his first full season with the Timberwolves, Russell averaged 19 points along with 5.8 assists. Then, in the 2020-21 season, Russell averaged the most assists per game in his career, with 7.1. The Timberwolves made the playoffs that season, which was only the second time in Russell’s career that he played in postseason games. Despite losing to the Memphis Grizzlies in the first round, Russell shot 38.7% from three-point range in the series.

On February 9, 2023, Russell was traded back to the Los Angeles Lakers, the team who initially drafted him eight years prior. In 17 regular season games with Los Angeles (where he often featured as more of a spot-up shooter instead of a playmaker with the ball in his hands all the time), Russell averaged 17.4 points per game and shot an impressive 41.4% from three-point range. During the 2022-23 playoffs, Russell averaged 13.3 points and 4.6 assists per game, yet struggled from three-point range, shooting 31%.

D’Angelo Russell 2023-24 Season Forecast

D’Angelo Russell is primed to have a successful 2023-24 season with the Los Angeles Lakers. Since LeBron James often acts as the team’s Point Guard and main playmaker, the pressure to produce scoring opportunities for his teammates isn’t there for Russell any longer. Of course, that lessened pressure comes an added expectation to make three-pointers — and Russell’s shooting struggles during last year’s playoffs earned him some criticism among Laker fans. While Russell was also criticized for poor defensive play at the beginning of his career, this is an aspect of his game that has much improved.

With another season’s worth of experience learning how to play alongside LeBron James, D’Angelo Russell’s stats should improve some in the 2023-24 season. If he can maintain his sharp three-point shooting that he had during last year’s regular season (if the Lakers make the playoffs), he might even be an X-factor for the team’s postseason success.
