Brad Marchand 2023-24 Profile
Brad Marchand, a 5-9 left winger, is the heart and soul of the Boston Bruins. The 35-year-old is going into his 15th season in the NHL, hoping to take the Bruins to the Stanley Cup.
Marchand was a third-round pick in 2006, and not many believed he would become an elite NHL player. He has grown into a world-class all-around player and remains one of the NHL’s most effective wingers in his mid-30s.
Marchand is a fan favorite since he leaves his heart on the ice every single night. He is constantly dangerous on the offensive line and serves well as a penalty killer.
Brad Marchand General Information
Brad Marchand was born in Hammonds Plains, Nova Scotia, Canada, on May 11, 1988.
Brad’s father, Kevin, was also a hockey player who transferred his love for the game to his son, and his mother, Lynn Marchand, was very supportive of his career.
Marchand began skating at the age of two in Lower Sackville, Nova Scotia and developed an aggressive playing style from a young age. He remembers starting to fight in games around the age of 13 as an outlet for the excessive energy that he got from his father, who once was involved in fights in 40 consecutive games.
Brad Marchand Background
Marchand started his hockey career playing for the Moncton Wildcats of the QMJHL. Head coach Ted Nolan recognized Marchand’s potential and gave him a more significant role in his second year with the team. In 68 games during the 2005-06 season, Marchand had 66 points, leading the team to a President’s Cup championship and the Memorial Cup finals.
Marchand caught the eye of the Bruins, who traded two fourth-round draft picks to the New York Islanders for a third-round pick that proved to be one of the smartest moves in HNL history.
The Bruins drafted Marchand 71st overall in 2006. Still, he had plenty of work to do before playing for the Bruins. He stayed in the QMJHL playing for the Val-d’Or Foreurs, scoring 33 goals and 47 assists in 57 regular season games. The following season, he ended up with the Halifax Mooseheads, recording 29 points in 26 games.
Brad Marchand’s NHL Career So Far
Before the 2008-09 season, Marchand joined the Bruins for the training camp but waited for his big debut until the next one. Meanwhile, he played for the Providence Bruins, Boston’s AHL affiliate.
He made only 20 appearances for the Bruins in his rookie season, recording only one point. The following 2010-11 season, Marchand proved that he belongs in the NHL. He had 41 points, four of which were short-handed goals, putting him on top of the league in this category. His effort made him a fan favorite, and he was the recipient of the Bruin’s Seventh Player Award, given by fans of the New England Sports Network to the player who surpassed expectations. He was a major part of the Bruins team that went all the way to win the Stanley Cup, and Marchand recorded 19 points in 25 postseason games, including two goals and one assist in Game 7 of the finals against the Vancouver Canucks.
During the 2011-12 season, Marchand scored his first hat-trick and continued to develop his reputation as a pest. By the end of that season, he was suspended multiple times and paid more than $150,000 in fines.
The following season was shortened due to the lockout, and Marchand had 18 goals and 18 assists for the year.
The 2013-14 season saw Marchand struggling, and he was sometimes relegated to the fourth line for the Bruins. Still, he played all 82 games in the season for the first time in his career, scoring 25 goals and dishing out a career-high 28 assists.
Going into the 2014-15 season, Marchand worked on his conditioning and the mental aspect of the game, which saw him scoring 24 goals, four of which were game-winners. The following season, he scored a career-high 37 goals, but the Bruins missed the Playoffs on both occasions.
Going into the 2016-17 season, the Bruins signed Marchand to an eight-year, $49 million contract extension. He led Boston in scoring at the beginning of the season, which earned him the first All-Star selection. He finished the season with a career-high 85 points, but the Bruins lost in the opening round to the Ottawa Senators. The following season, he had another 85 points in 68 games, but he was constantly under the radar for his behavior. He was suspended and fined multiple times for all various incidents and, some of which included kissing of his opponents.
The following 2018-19 season was the best one for Marchand as he scored 100 points, becoming the tenth player in Bruins history to reach the mark and the first since Joe Thornton during the 2002–03 season. That season, Marchand received an NHL second All-Star team selection, as well as his third consecutive Elizabeth C. Dufresne Trophy and the Bruins’ First Star.
The following season, Marchand became the 11th Bruins skater to reach 600 career points and finished with 87 points. He was on the pace to reach 100 again, but the season was shortened by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Going into the 2020-21 season, Marchand underwent a sports hernia surgery that carried an expected four-month recovery time. That season, he became the 13th player in Bruins history to play in 800 or more games for the team. That season, Marchand Marchand was named to the 2021 All-NHL First Team and finished fifth in Hart Trophy voting.
In the 2021-22 season, Marchand scored 80 points in 70 games for the Bruins. After the season, Marchand underwent hip arthroscopy and labral repair on both hips, which forced him to sit out for five months. He missed nine games of the season and contributed to the Bruins’ season that saw the team break the all-time record for wins (65) and points (135). The Bruins were the favorites to go all the way, but they lost to the Florida Panthers in the opening Playoff round despite having a 3-1 lead.
Brad Marchand 2023-24 Season Forecast
The Boston Bruins were stunned in the opening round of the Playoffs last season after having the best regular season record in NHL history. That didn’t sit well with Marchand and the other Bruins veterans, who are determined to get the job done this season.
Marchand has won one Stanley Cup in his career, and as the window is slowly closing for him, this is the season the win or bust season for the Bruins. Marchand still possesses what it takes to perform well under pressure, and as long as the Bruins have him, they can count on his leadership.
