Andrew Wiggins 2023-24 Profile

While Andrew Wiggins — the 6 foot 7, 194 pound small forward for the Golden State Warriors — hasn’t been able to match the massive expectations that were placed on him during his high school days, Wiggins is still a force to be reckoned with in the NBA; especially on a Warriors squad that plays in a way that complements his skillset perfectly. What’s more, he has already won a championship while playing on the Warriors, which is more impressive of an accomplishment than any individual accolades Wiggins might have earned to this point. Plus, there’s plenty of reason to believe that Wiggins — still only 28 years of age — has his best basketball ahead of him.

In this article, we’ll discuss Andrew Wiggins’ general information, his pre-NBA background, how his NBA career has gone up until this point, and predict how his 2023-24 season with Golden State will go.

Andrew Wiggins General Information

Andrew Christian Wiggins was born on February 23, 1995, in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. His parents are Mitchell Wiggins and Marita Payne. Mitchell Wiggins is a former NBA player, and Marita Payne is a former Olympian track and field sprinter.

Andrew Wiggins is currently dating Mychal Johnson, who played college basketball at Notre Dame. The couple have been dating since 2013, and they currently have two daughters together.

On October 15, 2022, Wiggins signed a 4 year, $109,000,002 contract with the Golden State Warriors — making for an average annual salary of $27,250,001. Wiggins’ net worth is estimated to be $65 million.

Andrew Wiggins wears jersey number 22, and is a size 14 (US) shoe.

Andrew Wiggins Background

Wiggins began playing organized basketball when he was 9, and dunked for the first time when he was 13. He attended Vaughan Secondary School for the first two years of high school, then transferred to Huntington Prep School in Huntington, West Virginia for his junior and senior years.

During his junior season at Huntington Prep, Wiggins averaged 24.2 points, 8.5 rebounds, 4.1 assists and 2.7 blocks per game. As a senior, he averaged 23.4 points, 11.2 rebounds, 2.6 blocks, and 2.5 assists per game.

After his senior season, Wiggins was named 2013 Naismith Prep Player of the Year, 2013 Gatorade National Player of the Year, and Mr. Basketball USA (despite being Canadian). He also played in both the Jordan Brand Classic and the McDonald’s All-American game.

Wiggins was rated the #1 overall prospect in his high school class, and ended up committing to play college basketball at the University of Kansas.

In his only season as a Kansas Jayhawk, Wiggins averaged 17.1 points per game, 5.9 rebounds per game, and shot 34.1% from three-point range. He was a semi-finalist for Naismith Player of the Year in his freshman season, as well.

After the season ended, Wiggins declared for the 2014 NBA Draft. And on June 26, 2014, Wiggins was selected with the first overall pick of the 2014 NBA Draft by the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Andrew Wiggins’ NBA Career So Far

Two months after the NBA Draft ended and before Wiggins’ rookie season, he was traded to the Minnesota Timberwolves. He made his NBA debut on October 29, 2014, and scored 6 points. He also participated in the Rising Stars Challenge that season, and won MVP. After finishing the regular season averaging 16.9 points, 4.6 rebounds, and 2.1 assists per game, Wiggins was named the NBA Rookie of the Year.

Despite the Timberwolves continuing to be a sub-par team, Wiggins improved his game massively during the 2015-16 season. He raised his scoring average to 20.7 points per game, and also increased his field goal percentage to 45.9% (which is 3rd best in his career).

Then came the 2016-17 season, which has been the best season of Wiggins’ NBA career, in terms of scoring. On November 13, 2016, Wiggins became the first Canadian-born player to score 40-plus points in an NBA game, after scoring 47 points against the Los Angeles Lakers. He finished the season averaging 23.6 points per game (which is still his career high), despite the Timberwolves finishing the season with a 31-51 record.

The 2017-18 season — which was the first after signing a big contract extension with the Timberwolves — saw some regression from Wiggins. His scoring average dropped to 17.7 points per game, which was the lowest since his rookie year. Still, when Wiggins reached 6,000 career points on February 7, 2018, he became the sixth-youngest player to reach that mark (at 22 years, 349 days old).

This 2017-18 season was the first time in his career that Wiggins played in the NBA playoffs. While the Timberwolves were eliminated in the first round, Wiggins averaged 15.8 points per game in the 5 game series.

Wiggins did improve some during the 2018-19 season — but perhaps not as much as many had expected. His scoring average increased to 18.1 points per game and the 4.8 rebounds and 2.5 assists per game he had were both career-highs at that point.

Midway through the 2019-20 season, Andrew Wiggins was traded to the Golden State Warriors. Yet, as Steph Curry and Klay Thompson were both injured for most of the season, the Warriors finished with a 15-50 record and missed the playoffs. Wiggins finished the season averaging 21.8 points per game.

In 2020-21, the Warriors were healthier, and finished with a good enough record to quality for the NBA play-in tournament. Yet, they lost both games there, and failed to qualify for the NBA playoffs. Wiggins scored 18.6 points per game during the regular season.

The 2021-22 season is the best one Wiggins has had. Not only did he make his first (and only) NBA All-Star team this season, but the Warriors advanced all the way to the NBA Finals and won the NBA Championship, giving Wiggins his only NBA Title. Wiggins finished the NBA Finals as the leading rebounder, blocker and second highest scorer for the Warriors after averaging 18.3 points, 8.8 rebounds and 1.5 blocks per game, and also played excellent defense against Jayson Tatum, the Boston Celtics’ best player.

Wiggins only played 37 regular season games during the 2022-23 season due to personal reasons. He did end up returning for the playoffs, however, and averaged 16.7 points per game in the 13 playoff games the Warriors played before losing in the Western Conference Semi-Finals.

Wiggins has also played in multiple tournaments for the Canadian Men’s National Team, including the 2016 Summer Olympics and the 2020 FIBA Men’s Olympic Qualifying Tournament.

Andrew Wiggins 2023-24 Season Forecast

By the time he retires, Andrew Wiggins will likely go down as the best Canadian-born player in NBA history. That’s a pretty massive accomplishment, in and of itself. As for this season, he’ll likely maintain the same role as an occasional scorer and defensive-minded player for the Warriors. Some nights, he looks like the best player on the court for them. And on other nights, he fades into the background and makes little impact. This is essentially the story of Wiggins’ career to this point. Yet, as I said before, he is still just 28 years old, and could still continue grow and play excellent basketball as the latter half of his career commences.
