His ability to defend passes, combined with his tackling skills, make him a valuable asset in the Saints’ defensive lineup. Alontae Taylor 2023-24 Profile
Although Alontae Taylor — the 6 foot 1, 199 pound cornerback for the New Orleans Saints — hasn’t made his mark in the NFL quite yet, many people believe that Taylor is only a season or two away from being one of the league’s very best cornerbacks. What’s for sure is that, if Taylor’s high-flying interception during the Saints’ victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers during Week 17 of the NFL regular season is any indication, Taylor possesses an adept ball-hawking ability that can’t be taught, and is only utilized by the elite defensive backs in the NFL. So if Taylor can display that same ability week in and week out, the Saints have a future superstar on their hands.
Yet, Taylor will also need to remain healthy if he’s to be a major producer for this team moving forward. While he hasn’t been able to do so thus far in his short career, there’s no reason to believe that his injury woes will persist past the 2023-24 NFL season.
In this article, we’ll discuss Alontae Taylor’s general information, the background he grew up with, how his (brief) NFL career has gone thus far, and what we can expect (and are hoping) to see from Taylor during the next few seasons, and throughout the rest of his career.
Alontae Taylor General Information
Alontae Devaun Taylor was born on December 3, 1998, in Winchester, Tennessee, USA. His parents are Laurie and Nate Love, and Taylor also has two sisters, named Al’keiah Martin and Lauryn Newbern.
While Alontae Taylor isn’t suspected of being in a relationship currently, he tends to keep his private life very private, so there’s no way of knowing for sure.
On July 19, 2022, Taylor signed a 4 year, $7,204,698 rookie contract with the New Orleans Saints — making for an average annual salary of $1,801,175. While it’s tough to estimate what Alontae Taylor’s net worth is currently, a safe estimate would be that it’s anywhere between $3-$5 million.
Alontae Taylor currently wears jersey number 1 — although he wore number 2 while he was in college and number 27 during his rookie season with the Saints.
Alontae Taylor Background
Alontae Taylor grew up playing baseball, basketball, and football, but decided to focus on football after his freshman season of high school. Taylor attended Coffee County Central High School in Manchester, Tennessee. Taylor played quarterback in high school, and had 8,225 yards of total offense and 75 total touchdowns across his entire career.
After his 2018 season came to a close, Taylor played in the 2018 Under Armour All-American Game. Soon after that, Taylor committed to play college football at the University of Tennessee.
As a freshman at Tennessee in 2018, Taylor played in all 12 games, which included 8 starts — making Taylor Tennessee’s first true freshman defensive back to start a season opener since Cameron Sutton in 2013. Across that freshman season, Taylor recorded 40 tackles, 1 tackle for loss, 2 forced fumbles, 2 pass breakups and 1 blocked kick.
As a sophomore, Taylor appeared in all 13 games, with 6 starts at cornerback. He finished the season with 33 tackles, 1 interception and 3 pass breakups. At season’s end, Taylor was given the John Stucky Award at team’s postseason banquet (which is given for outstanding on field performance and effort during team strength and conditioning exercises), and was a member of the SEC Academic Honor Roll.
Despite battling through a hamstring injury for much of his 2020 junior season at Tennessee, Taylor still played in 8 games and made 5 starts. Over the season, Taylor tallied 29 tackles and had 2 tackles for loss, plus 5 passes defended while making 1 interception on the year. He earned SEC Academic Honor Roll accolades for the second straight year, as well.
But Taylor took off in his senior season at Tennessee, where he proved to be one of the best cornerbacks in the entire SEC. Taylor started all 12 games of the regular season and had a career-best 60 tackles, 6 pass breakups, and 2 interceptions.
Taylor elected to sit out to 2021 Music City Bowl, in preparation for the 2022 NFL Draft. Across his Tennessee career, Taylor had 162 tackles, 4 interceptions, 1 pick-six, and 1 fumble recovery for a touchdown.
After producing an excellent pre-draft combine — where he ran a 4.36 40 yard dash, had a 39 inch vertical jump, and an over 11 foot broad jump — Taylor convinced NFL scouts that he was worthy of being a top 50 pick in the 2022 NFL Draft.
Sure enough, Taylor was drafted by the New Orleans saints in the second round (49th overall pick) of the 2022 NFL Draft.
Alontae Taylor’s NFL Career So Far
Unfortunately, Alontae Taylor was placed on injured reserve on September 24, 2022, just a few weeks into his NFL career, due to a knee injury. Thankfully, Taylor only missed a few weeks’ time, and was activated on October 20 of that same year. Taylor finished his rookie season having appeared in 13 games, of which he started 9. He finished the season with 46 total tackles and 11 passes defended.
Taylor has shown marked progression in his second NFL season during 2023. Taylor has played in all 16 games so far this season, started 13 of them, and has a total of 74 tackles (55 of which have been solo tackles), 1 sack, 13 pass breakups, and 1 interception.
The lone interception (which was the first of his career) came during Week 17, where Taylor picked off a pass thrown by Baker Mayfield, which was intended for Trey Palmer early in the second quarter. It was a highlight-reel worthy catch, and showed Saints fans (and the rest of the league) that Taylor has true potential to be a top-tier cornerback in the near future.
Alontae Taylor Future Forecast
While the New Orleans Saints aren’t playing in the 2024 NFL Playoffs, at least Alontae Taylor has proven himself to be an excellent draft pick, after a somewhat average rookie season. Not only had Taylor remained healthy all year, but he has played every one of the Saints’ defensive snaps in three out of their last four games. This proves that the organization has complete faith in him and expects Alontae Taylor to be a cornerstone for their defensive plans of the future.
Hopefully, Taylor will be able to produce more interceptions in future seasons, as that’s what the Saints drafted him for. Yet, right now they can be content knowing that Taylor seems poised to lead their defense for years to come; which will hopefully allow them to realize postseason success in the coming years, as well.
